I used to get so bummed when I saw that there were unsubscribers from my email list, but now I celebrate it. I’m still curious about the data / the why, but I often don’t get that information since it’s easier to unsubscribe from email marketing lists now.
Something that I plan to do in the future, and I’ve seen alot of people do now, is send out emails to un-engaged email marketing subscribers to see if they still want to be on the email marketing list.
When I start this, I think I’m going to have a dramatic subject line like “Gone Forever” or “I guess this is goodbye” or something like that, so they will open it. I’ll also probably send out a follow-up email a week or two after that.
Here are five reasons why unsubscribers are great for your email marketing.
Deliverability
Did you know that the more un-opened emails you have from all your subscribers, the more likely email companies, like Google and Yahoo, are to mark you emails as spam or just completely not deliver them?
Well, that’s the case. So, we definitely want people who aren’t interested in our emails to get off our email marketing lists. You should see an improvement in deliverability over time.
If They’re Not Interested, They’re Not Buying
Isn’t it better to get your message out to people who enjoy what you say and want to purchase your services? I know I much prefer an audience that has engaged followers or subscribers versus just throwing marketing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it sticks.
Save Money
Most email marketing companies, like Mailchimp, charge you based on the number of email subscribers you have. The less you have, the more money you save. Now, if these were active and engaged email subscribers, that would be one thing. But if they are not, they’re just costing you money sitting on there on your email marketing list like that.
Important FYI: Make sure you archive them from your list to ensure you’re not getting charged. That was something that I didn’t even know was happening. If they unsubscribe they might still show up as technically on your list, depending on your email marketing service provider. Make sure to just double check.
Reduce the Energetic Ties
Let’s face it: there’s an energetic and mental tie to customers and potential clients. If someone is on your email marketing list, a tiny part of your brain knows that. You are putting energy and effort to please, entertain, educate, or provide some other sort of value to them. If they are not your soul aligned clients, then they are taking energy and mental power away from you that you could either house for yourself or utilize for people who love what you do and how you talk about it.
The Data
Sometimes we’re not always sure about what words to choose for the subject line, blurb, or the email content itself. So, if you end up having alot of people unsubscribe after a particular email, it was probably something about that email that they didn’t like. It’s time to analyze what could have gone wrong. If you know those email subscribers personally, you could ask them. Or you could post the email in a Facebook or Reddit group, asking for feedback on the email.
I know that I will often unsubscribe from an email list that I like but that started sending out multiple emails per day. So, that’s something else to look into. Did you increase or decrease the amount of emails you’re sending out?
